The New 80/20 of Coding With AI

When
Thu, Oct 1 · 1:30 – 2 PM

AI coding agents promise to offload the boring stuff—and when they work, they feel like magic. But what happens when an agent cheerfully tries to build a second control system for a problem you’ve already solved? In this talk, we’ll walk through a real-world case study debugging a classification gap in an active project using Claude and Codex. We’ll look at how AI agents approach problem-solving in existing codebases, why greenfield assumptions lead to architectural bloat, and why human intervention remains the ultimate filter. AI hasn’t removed the floor for software engineering—it raised it. The new 80/20 split means letting AI handle the bulk of execution, while doubling down on human direction: deep codebase knowledge, design pattern awareness, and the confidence to say "no."
